American Tanka is a fairly complex art form, predicated on the basic Tibetan mandala motif. Its constants are the use of gold and silver thread (Upavita, the thread that connects all souls), gold leaf, waterfalls of peony petals, pearls, and fragments of the essential mystic lyric, such as from Whitman, Jeffers, Cavafy, Masters. They are made to reflect the luminous heart of being.
